Digital payments have got a huge push post the government’s demonetization exercise in November 2016. Initially, a lot of people made digital payments more out of compulsion than finding it a more convenient method to transact. But now, using a mobile wallet has become a habit for most of us. Then UPI-based BHIM app by the government and other similar apps made things a lot easier.

Unlike Paytm (where you need to store money in your Paytm mobile wallet), UPI-based BHIM app enables you to transfer money directly from one bank account to another using the recipient’s mobile number or UPI ID (also called Virtual Payment Address – which works just like an email address).

In other words, UPI-based payment apps like BHIM allow users to transfer money without requiring the bank account details of the recipient. The UPI ID of the recipient is used as a proxy for the account number and IFSC code, thereby simplifying the process of money transfer.

After BHIM, the latest entrant in the digital payment space is Tez app developed by the internet search giant ‘Google’. Just like BHIM, Google Tez is a digital payment solution based on the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) platform built by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). Tez allows users, free of charge, to make small or big payments straight from their bank accounts.

For both BHIM and Tez app to work, both sender and recipient must have UPI-enabled bank account. Note: According to data compiled by the NPCI, the number of banks that have adopted UPI has gone to 55 in August 2017, from 21 in the same month last year. And, the volume of transactions has grown from ₹3.092 crore in August 2016 to ₹4127.19 crore in August 2017. You can either ask your bank whether it supports UPI or not, or you can check the list of banks supporting UPI at the official website of NPCI.

Transaction Limit: While BHIM app users can send up to ₹10,000 per transaction and a maximum of ₹20,000 per day (per bank account linked on BHIM), Tez app users can send up to ₹1 lakh per day, with a maximum limit of 20 transactions per day.

Using the Tez app, merchants with individual current accounts can receive up to ₹50,000 per month with UPI with no fees. After that, banks may charge fees or impose additional requirements, depending on various factors.

If we talk about Paytm, you can store up to ₹20,000 in your Paytm wallet and exceed this limit to ₹1 lakh by providing your full KYC details. You can send only up to ₹5,000 per transaction via Paytm. It should be noted that you can transfer up to ₹20,000 per month from your Paytm wallet to your/or any other bank account as per the RBI regulations. This limit is ₹25,000 per month for full KYC Paytm customers.

The only reason for preferring BHIM, Tez or any other UPI-based payment app over Paytm as of now is that the UPI-based payment apps don’t require you to transfer money from your bank account to mobile wallet to make transactions. This means that your money stays in your bank account and you keep getting interest.

Interestingly, things are changing now with Paytm Payments Bank (regulated by RBI), a new offering from Paytm. You can now keep your Paytm wallet balance in the Paytm Payments Bank and earn interest of 4% per annum. Moreover, Paytm is also working on UPI integration, and you never know, it may start supporting UPI in the next few months.

We don’t know what would be your preference amongst Paytm, BHIM or Tez. But, here is a step-by-step guide on how to use and transact with Tez. It is worth mentioning that the basic requirements for setting up BHIM app are more or less same.

Initial Setup: Download and Install Tez app

Step 1: Download the Tez app on your smartphone. Irrespective of whether you are on iOS or Android, the app is available on both the platforms for free.

Step 2: As soon as you install the app, the first thing it will ask you to select your preferred language. You can choose amongst English, Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Marathi, Tamil, and Telugu. Post the language selection, the app will prompt you to enter your mobile number registered with your bank account (bank must be UPI-enabled). Note: Install the Tez app only on that device that carries the registered mobile number, otherwise phone number verification will not work.

Next, the app also requires you to link it to the Google account signed into the phone, on both Android as well as iOS. You do have the option to link a different account, but a Google account is mandatory for the app to work. The app will also require access to your contacts.

Step 3: After phone number verification by an SMS OTP, you’ll be given the option to either use the current phone lock settings (such as passcode, fingerprint, or pattern lock) or set up a separate Google PIN to prevent unauthorized access to the Tez app.

Add a Bank Account

After the initial setup, the next step is selecting a bank from a given list of UPI-based banks. Select a bank with which your mobile number is registered. The app will fetch your bank details and your bank account will be linked to Tez. The next step in the process is setting up a UPI ID (also called Virtual Payment Address). If you already have a UPI ID (and that’s possible if you’re already using any UPI-based payment app to which your bank account is already linked), the Tez app will ask for your existing UPI PIN to verify your existing UPI ID. You can even reset the UPI PIN if needed.

In case you don’t have a UPI ID, you can create one by providing your Debit Card details linked to your bank account. This also means that the Debit Card is mandatory to set up a UPI ID. After entering the Debit Card details, you’ll be asked to create a UPI PIN. Keep your UPI PIN safe as it will always be required to authorize the transactions. After these steps are complete, you’re ready to transact through Tez.

Note: A UPI ID is a unique identifier which you can use to send and receive money on UPI. Think of it as an email ID which you can use to transfer money.

  • How to send or receive money using the Tez app?

Making payments using the Tez app is as easy as sending a text message to a friend. However, there are multiple ways through which you can transact with Tez. Let’s have a quick look at all of them one by one.

  1. Send Money via Phone Number: This option comes in handy when you want to send money to another Tez user. Select ‘Tez User Phone Number’ from the options –> Enter mobile number of the recipient –> Type amount –> Enter UPI PIN to confirm it. The app also lists other Tez users from your phonebook for a faster process.

  1. Send Money via UPI ID: Just enter the UPI ID of the recipient, amount and then the UPI PIN to confirm the payment.

  1. Add Account Number: In case the recipient is neither a Tez user nor have a UPI ID, you can add recipient’s bank details such as account number and IFSC code to transfer the money.

  1. Scan QR Code: Tez also allows you to send money via QR Code. Simply select the QR Code option on your phone, and then scan the QR code of the recipient. After that, enter the amount followed by the UPI PIN to complete the transaction.

  1. Cash Mode: The uniqueness of Tez app lies in the ‘Cash Mode’, which allows you to send money instantly to another Tez user near you without knowing UPI ID, phone number or bank account details of the recipient. Because ‘Cash Mode’ uses audio pairing to help you connect with nearby Tez users.

On the home page of the app, you might have noticed one circle in the centre of the screen. You need to tap that circle to activate the ‘Cash Mode’. To make the payment using this mode, slide that circle up towards ‘Pay’ and ask the recipient to slide that circle down towards ‘Receive’. Tap the recipient’s profile photo on your device and then enter the amount you want to pay. Yes, it is that simple.

Note: For payment options 1, 4, and 5 mentioned above, the recipient must be a Tez user.

How secure is Tez app?

According to Google, Tez is backed by multiple security levels, including dedicated security systems offered by Indian banks, the NPCI, and the Tez Shield (which works 24/7 to help detect fraud, prevent hacking, and to verify and protect user identity). Furthermore, each payment transaction is secured with your UPI PIN and the app is secured with a Google PIN or your screen lock method such as fingerprint.

What are the extra benefits of using the Tez app?

To gain greater traction among digital natives, Google has brought out an introductory offer on referrals, which lets you earn up to 50 referral rewards by inviting new users to Tez. Both of you will get ₹51 whenever the new user (who has installed the app using your referral link) makes a transaction. Additionally, Tez users have the opportunity to win Tez Scratch Cards worth up to ₹1,000 with each eligible transaction and get enrolled for the weekly Lucky Sundays draw of ₹1 lakh. The minimum transaction amount should be ₹50.

What is Tez for Business?

Google also announced a program called “Tez for Business,” which offers businesses (with an online presence) to have their own business channel on the Tez app where they can engage directly with their customers to share offers, send payment reminders, link to their mobile website or customer support, and more. Companies like Domino’s, RedBus, PVR Cinemas, Dish TV, and Jet Airways have already joined the “Tez for Business” program to reach out their customers.
